It seems that everyone's' dream is to win big in Las Vegas. The lights, the sights and sounds that can only be found in Las Vegas. The city is unlike any other in the world, and people from every corner of the world make Las Vegas their destination for a one of a kind experience.

Back in the 1940's and 1950's, Las Vegas was just coming into it's own with a few casinos and a few big named celebrities headlining in the shows. The background of Las Vegas has always raised a few eyebrows as to how the city got it's start, and has given to many legends and rumors. These only add to the mystique today. The casinos of the past may not always have operated on the up and up, but those of today are the most secure of any in the world.

Some of the most famous of the Las Vegas Casinos are The Flamingo, which started business in in 1946 as the Flamingo Hotel with only 105 rooms. It has gone through four name changes since that time and is now known as the Flamingo Las Vegas. The Desert Inn opened it's doors in 1948 and in 1999 became the famed Wynn Resort. In 1950, the Silver Slipper/ Golden Slipper was the first of the major casinos to open. In 1952, the Sands Casino, one of the most memorable opened it's doors and offered 200 rooms in their hotel, later this casino became the Sands MGM in 1988 and in 1999 The Venetian opened where it stood, with over 3000 rooms.

Las Vegas Casinos' popularity waned slightly in the 1960's through the 1980's but saw a boom in the 1990's with the grand casinos opening and the face of the strip changing as the old landmark casinos were torn down to make way for the bigger, more elegant palatial casinos of today. In 1990 the Excalibur had it's grand opening with more than 4,000 hotel rooms and an elegance never before seen. From here it seems to have been a race to see who could build bigger and better and more extravagant casinos, resorts and hotels. In January of 1992 the Casino Royale took over for Nob Hill, previously Joey's New Yorker Night Club. Then in 1993 the luxurious Luxor Las Vegas with it's distinctive pyramid shape had it's grand opening.

There are many people that must take credit for the city of Las Vegas being what it is today. Their history and their legends will live forever in the minds of young and old. Some of these are true characters whose contributions helped to build the old legends, and some were true visionaries. The nickname 'Sin City' suited this city so well in the past and even today. But, Las Vegas has grown to much more and has a familial feel to it once you get away from The Strip. If you get the chance, this is definitely one city that everyone should see in their lifetime.
